Child of Light

How warm it was in days of yore
Grab the dog and run to the store
A crunchy leaf, a world to explore
Bugs in the grass, asking what am I for?

Sodium vapor to let us know we’d be missed
Wonder who we’d be, the one we first kissed
The dinner table now turned to wist
Pulled by the two hands upon my wrist

But care not for greys o’ child of light
There are hours yet before the night
Time to grow, time to build, to learn what’s right
So few days gone by to hold on to tight

Tales upon tongues, with eyes held wide
Hear the wisdom of the broken guide
Glean the truth from tears once cried
Let your mind expand eternal horizons inside

The river widens and changes course
Branches wild from the familial source
There are valleys and canyons to carve in force
And never mind the rider ‘pon his pale horse

Atop the bones of earth may you feel the high
Fires upon the sandy shores, shout into the sky
Cool waters in verdant green, tree-whispered sigh
Dirty hands and happy heart for the sake of the try

Find the one who shares your love
Hands clasped and a playful shove
Build a new tomorrow, the kind you dreamt of
Back when you cast your light to stars above

Child of light it’s time to tell your stories now
More dirt upon your hands, sweat on your brow
The ground is not as soft as when it cradled thou
But the soil will yield to your crafted plow

A twinge in your back but strength to carry on
A line on your face from laughs before the dawn
But the light dims subtly, shaded hours drawn
Fond memories now from the days left gone

A panic, a start, from interrupted sleep
The face in the mirror gazes with eyes grown deep
A susurrus chill, through still curtains creep
The precipice yawns in the dark, edges steep

Child of light, fear not the silent drum
There are rivers still yet unswum
Look at the lives you’ve touched, how far you’ve come
Nothing can fill you more than the dreams you came from

The dawn still comes, illuminates all you do
The leaves still fall then in spring grow anew
The birds still sing, they know what’s true
For all your life, it begins and ends with you
