About

Rather than use this space to talk about who I am(Male/36/California), I’m going to try my hand at some personal philosophy. Oh, but before I get to that, the name of the site is an anagram of my own name, in case there was a curiosity around that.

I had the great pleasure to speak with Pico Iyer years ago and that interaction in which we talked about his book ‘The Art of Stillness’ has had a profound impact on my outlook. In a roundabout way, this ‘About’ page is about why I write at all, the short of it being I hope you, dear reader, can take these words written on a page and through them revel in the escape, the quietness of a short story or a poem before the clamorous demands of life become incessant.

There can be a profound beauty in nothingness. I once stumbled upon a quote that I have ruminated on over the years, “The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” In essence, it’s the perspectives we adopt, not the milestones we achieve, destinations we reach or dalliances we amuse ourselves with, that ultimately tells us where we stand.

Every morning I wake up and a day of nothing stretches out before me. We spend our lives filling in the nothing with distractions, obligations, responsibilities. However, before the demands of work, before the calls, the noise and the waves, in the waking hours there is stillness. Through the silence, the stillness, every morning is a clear window into the motionless journey that we are all riding along with. Through the changing of the days, the seasons, rays of light breaking through a grey dappled sky, remind us that beyond the obscurations of the clouds, there is a wide open sky above. So too is true of our journey upon this Earth, every day looking out from within our hearts we see a life filled with color, shapes, unmitigated beauty upon an unchanging landscape.

Going nowhere is a grand adventure that makes sense of everywhere else.
