The Tower

A warden of the lonesome shore
The sent’nel stands on high
The pirate tower keeps its watch
Beneath the brooding sky

Foundation cracked and crown lies bare
Its fire long since fled
But still it stands against the waves
To keep the silent dead

So heave away, ye roaring seas
And tear the earth in twain
Tho’ time may claim the sailor’s bones
The Tower will remain

The tides have clawed a thousand years
The cliffs have bowed with age
The winds have writ a thousand songs
And worn the tattered page

The lantern’s glow is lost to night
The keeper’s name forgot
Yet in the stone the ages past
The watcher man hath wrought

So heave away, ye roaring seas
And tear the earth in twain
Tho’ time may claim the sailor’s bones
The Tower will remain

The moonlight rests on sagg’d roof
The dawn gives light to scars
A relic of the world before
That watched the birth of stars

Though Holly climb and mortar fall
Though years may fade its grace
The sea will find no yielding soul
Within that hallowed place

So heave away, ye roaring seas
And tear the earth in twain
Tho’ time may claim the sailor’s bones
The Tower will remain

So heave away, ye endless waves
Cry doom through wind and rain
For when the world is dust and cold
The Tower will remain!
